Bootcamp: Quantum Network Essentials

HOsted by:

Quantum computing is a significant, emerging development in information technology, with use-cases and applications that are only beginning to be understood. This evolution represents a major paradigm shift, as the basic elements, production, operation, and applications of quantum systems are entirely new with some in the system making significant strides towards addressing this at a system’s level.

Current research and investment have focused on harnessing the power of qubits in a single quantum computer. The next challenge lies in quantum communications and networking.  However, quantum companies are currently using different qubit modalities, parameters, and control approaches, creating a potential limitation. Each approach may reach a computing capacity ceiling, and the industry may face obstacles due to siloed quantum systems.

Classical networking solutions cannot be directly applied to quantum systems due to their fundamental differences.

Agenda

We propose a workgroup to define and refine a generic distributed quantum computing reference architecture that addresses:

1. Qubit I/O:  Extraction and conversion of qubits from a quantum computing node to a common modality for optical network transit and entanglement.

2. Quantum Network Operations:  Approaches to ensure coherency and fidelity as distances increase.

3. Quantum Network Control:  Methods for controlling quantum operations, such as channel creation, detection, switching, routing, and initialization.
